Starting School Planner
Tell me a little about your child to get started
Please enter your child's name
Please enter your child's date of birth
This planner is designed for children who will be between 4½ and 5½ years old when they start school. If your child falls outside this range, some questions may be less accurate for their stage of development.
South Australia has two school intake dates per year. This planner calculates your preparation time based on a late January start. If your child is starting mid-year, use the preparation guidance as a general guide rather than a precise timeline.

Section 3
The Starting School Planner is a parent-observation tool designed to help families reflect on their child's development in the lead-up to starting school. It is not a clinical assessment, developmental screening instrument, psychological evaluation, or substitute for professional advice.
This planner is designed for families in the general preparation phase who are not currently working with a specialist. If your child is already receiving support from an occupational therapist, speech pathologist, psychologist, or developmental paediatrician, their professional plan is the right guide to follow. Using this planner alongside or instead of specialist advice is not recommended.
Results are based entirely on the observations provided by the parent or caregiver completing the planner. They reflect those observations — not an independent assessment of the child — and should not be used as a diagnostic measure or to make decisions about a child's educational placement, medical care, or therapeutic support.
The five domains covered in this planner are aligned with the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) framework. This does not imply that results are equivalent to an AEDC-administered assessment, which is conducted by trained teachers across a nationally representative sample.
This tool is designed for children starting primary school in 2027. Most families complete this planner when their child is between 4½ and 5½ years old. If your child is younger than 4 years or has already started primary school, the questions may not accurately reflect their stage of development.
If you have concerns about your child's development — including their speech, physical development, emotional regulation, learning, or social skills — please speak with your GP, paediatrician, or a qualified early childhood specialist. Your GP can advise on what support options and referral pathways are available to you.
Nousli Pty Ltd accepts no liability for any decisions made in relation to a child's educational placement, medical care, therapeutic support, or developmental assessment on the basis of this planner's results. This planner does not constitute professional advice of any kind. Results are provided for general informational and planning purposes only.
